NACADA webinar on Dec. 11

Submitted by Michael L. Lynch

The last NACADA webinar for the fall semester will be “Developing Intercultural Communication Skills for Academic Advising” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, in Room 227 at the K-State Student Union.

The rapid internationalization of our institutions of higher education has created a climate in which all education professionals are required to work with students and colleagues who do not share our world view or cultural norms. Intercultural competence has become an expected skill set for all of us in higher education today, yet few of us have had more than rudimentary exposure to the field of intercultural communication. In this Web event, sponsored by NACADA’s Global Engagement Commission, our panelists will discuss essential concepts of intercultural communication and their application to academic advising. They will consider the need for paying attention to cultural differences, challenges and opportunities of culturally diverse environments, understanding cultural differences and their impact on academic advising, and more.

Moderator: Tyann Cherry, senior academic advisor, Webster University.

Panelists:

Kathy McKeiver, coordinator, international student academic advising, Center for International Education, Northern Arizona University.

Luiza Dreasher, multicultural liaison officer/academic advisor, College of Arts and Sciences, Iowa State University.

Yvonne Halden, graduate student advisor, Architecture/City Planning/Interior Design/Landscape Architecture & Design and Planning, University of Manitoba.
