The International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society

Daniel L. Ireton, Joelle Pitts and Ben Ward have published "Library Discovery through Augmented Reality: A Game Plan for Academics" in volume 9, issue 4 of The International Journal of Technology, Knowledge and Society.

In order to create innovative pathways to services and resources, the three authors propose placing a "game-layer" on top of the library, luring new patrons with the potential of playing an alternate/augmented reality game. Using both physical and virtual library space a variety of "nodes" are created that present users with story fragments and puzzles and that draw players to various library locales.

Ireton is an assistant professor and undergraduate and community services librarian. He works primarily with undergraduate students, providing reference assistance and instruction in library tools and services.

Pitts is an assistant professor and instructional design librarian. She is responsible for the creation and maintenance of Web-based learning objects and environments aimed at improving information literacy.

Ward is an instructional designer who has developed and designed training programs, distance courses, face-to-face courses and instructional games. He works in the Information Technology Assistance Center.
