National Stuttering Association support group meeting
Submitted by Makenzie Stansbury
The faculty, staff and students in the communication sciences and disorders department are organizing a monthly support group for people who stutter. The first meeting of the semester will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Campus Creek Complex on the east side of campus behind Justin Hall.
Stuttering is a communication disorder involving disruptions, or "disfluencies," in a person's speech. In addition to the disfluency of speech, people who stutter often experience physical tension and struggle in their speech muscles, as well as embarrassment, anxiety, and fear about speaking. There are many resources available for people who stutter, including support groups.
The Manhattan Chapter of the National Stuttering Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to the support of people who stutter, provides a safe and friendly atmosphere for people who stutter, and those affected by stuttering.
Please check in at the front reception desk upon arrival. Free parking available in lot behind the complex.
At meetings individuals will be able to:
- meet others who stutter
- share experiences
- practice your speaking skills
- work on moving forward with dignity and respect
Meetings are at 6:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of the month. For questions, email Makenzie at manhattannsa@gmail.com. Hope to see you there!
