The Chi Lota Chi chapter of Mortar Board at Kansas State University was among the outstanding Mortar Board chapters recognized at the 2014 Mortar Board National Conference recently in Atlanta, Georgia.
The chapter received the Silver Torch Award. This honor is presented to chapters executing timeliness and dedication while exemplifying the ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.
"The Silver Torch award is presented to chapters that meet all the standards and requirements as outlined in our national bylaws," said Zach Stroth, senior in family studies and human services, Shawnee, and Mortar Board president. "The award shows that our Mortar Board chapter is truly dedicated and passionate. We have a 21-year streak of winning either the Silver Torch or Golden Torch awards."
K-State members exemplify the values of Mortar Board by hosting academic events, promoting scholarship and leadership among the K-State campus and Manhattan community and performing various service projects.
"The group writes weekly letters to fifth-grade pen pals, hosts an annual Faculty Recognition event to honor outstanding K-State faculty, and invites local youth to a Reading Is Leading event in which kids get to read and learn with student-athletes and Willie the Wildcat, among many other activities," said Tracey Bamberger, Mortar Board advisor.
