SafeZone introductory training: Student edition

Submitted by Anna Waugh

SafeZone will offer a student edition introductory training from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in 113 Leadership Studies Building. This training will focus on equipping students with skills to be active bystanders on and off campus. Representatives from the Office of Student Life; the Center for Advocacy, Response, and Education, or CARE; LGBT Resource Center; Counseling Services; and the Office of Institutional Equity will be available to answer questions and educate attendees about the resources provided through each office.

Bystander intervention refers to a range of actions individuals can use to prevent harm when there is a risk for violence to another person. Bystanders who intervene make a choice to not be complicit to the harmful actions they witness. There is a wide range of safe and creative options individuals and groups can use to intervene.

SafeZone has been a part of Kansas State University's atmosphere since the 1970s when it was initially started to help those facing discrimination because of sexual orientation. After a revitalization of the program in 2002, SafeZone has evolved to fit the needs of current K-State community members. Allies are now educated to help those coming from a variety of backgrounds with needs concerning hateful acts like bullying or discrimination, LGBTQ related concerns, or sexual violence. Since SafeZone's creation on campus, more than 1,000 allies have been trained. Register for this event or learn more about SafeZone.
