October a month of treats with Bill Cosby, music, art and more at K-State

From a night with comedian Bill Cosby to anniversary art celebrations and musical performances by guest artists, faculty and students, Kansas State University is bustling with a plethora of cultural events throughout October.
The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by K-State's McCain Performance Series, department of music and Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:
* The exhibition "Makers Framed: Photographic Portraits by George Kren" runs through Oct. 16 at the Beach Museum of Art and features portraits of Kansas artists and people with connections to the arts taken by Kren, a former K-State professor of history.
* "Lines Traveling Through Space: Ghosts and Shadows, Minimal Sculpture by Tal Streeter" runs through Nov. 13 at the Beach Museum and features the work of Manhattan native Streeter.
* "Teresa Schmidt: 2011 Friends of the Beach Museum of Art Gift Print Artist" runs through Dec. 11 at the Beach Museum. The exhibition displays a selection of works by Schmidt, professor of art at K-State.
* "Art and Psychology: The Work of Roy Langford (1903-1990)" runs through Dec. 19 at the Beach Museum and features the works of Langford, a former longtime K-State psychology professor.
* Come participate in the "Introduction to 20th-Century American Art History, Part I" at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 3, at the Beach Museum. A part of the Art History Lecture Series, the presentation will be lead by Katherine Schlageck, Beach Museum senior educator.
* Comedy entertainer Bill Cosby will perform as part of K-State's McCain Performance Series at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 9, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $24.50 to $100, with a variety of discounts available for K-State students, faculty and staff; military members; and youth 18 and under. * Come make a giant party hat at the Special Workshop for Beach Buddies and Family Members in celebration of the Beach Museum of Art's birthday week. The workshop will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 10, at the Beach Museum. Reservations are required by calling 785-532-7718 or email to klwalk@k-state.edu. Participants must be a Beach Family Member or Beach Buddy. Memberships are available at the door.
* "Meet the Art: Perspective" at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Beach Museum. Led by docent Karen Hummel, the event will feature an in-depth look at the use of perspective in art.
* The K-State department of music and K-State Theatre present the "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12-15 and Oct. 19-22 in Nichols Hall. The musical will also be performed at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, and Sunday, Oct. 23, in Nichols Hall. An admission fee will be charged. * K-State's Amy Rosine, assistant professor of music and a soprano, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in All Faiths Chapel. Among other works, Rosine's performance will feature "Serenade to Music" by Vaughan Williams, performed with a chamber ensemble of faculty and students. K-State's Amanda Arrington, staff accompanist, will accompany on piano.
* The Yamato Drummers of Japan will bring the ancient art of taiko drumming to K-State at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $12 to $35, with a variety of discounts available for K-State students, faculty and staff; military members; and youth 18 and under. * K-State will host the Central States Marching Band Festival from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
* The Beach Museum of Art celebrates its 15th anniversary open house at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16. Come celebrate the museum's tradition of connecting the campus and community through art. The celebration will include cupcakes, party hats, gallery activities and surprises for all.
* Guest artist Benjamin Morris-Cline will perform a cello recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, in All Faiths Chapel. Morris-Cline is an assistant professor of cello and bass at Fort Hays State University, where he also serves as director of orchestras and department head.
* The "Introduction to 20th-Century American Art History, Part II," lead by Katherine Schlageck, Beach Museum senior educator, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Beach Museum.
* Guest artists Joe Dan Harper, tenor, and Anne Kissel-Harper, piano, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in All Faiths Chapel. From the State University of Fredonia, the duo is sought after as interpreters of contemporary music. They have presented many premieres, including the song cycle "Come, Look Quietly" composed for them by Daniel Pinkham. The pair has also performed extensively in the Boston area, including Boston's Jordan Hall and on National Public Radio's "Live Performances with Richard Knisely."
* The K-State Orchestra will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in McCain Auditorium. The orchestra is conducted by David Littrell, distinguished professor of music.
* K-State's David Pickering, assistant professor of music, will present "Organ Music for a Wednesday Morning" at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in All Faiths Chapel. Pickering will perform in collaboration with his organ students, inviting people to hear standard and contemporary organ music and become familiar with the organ's repertoire.
* Come enjoy a concert by the K-State Wind Ensemble and Concert Band at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in McCain Auditorium. The wind ensemble is directed by Frank Tracz, director of bands, with guest conductors Don Linn, instructor of music, and graduate assistant Andy Feyes, doctoral student in curriculum and instruction, Manhattan. The concert band is directed by Linn with guest conductors Philip Payne, assistant professor of music, and graduate assistant Lauran Assad, master's student in music, Manhattan.
* A General Student Recital will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in All Faiths Chapel. The recital will feature K-State students from the voice, woodwind, string, brass, percussion and keyboard divisions.
* "Looking at Kansas: Visual Artists from the Sunflower State," at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Beach Museum. The event is an in-depth examination of four Kansas visual artists who achieved national recognition: John Steuart Curry, Birger Sandzen, Henry Varnum Poor and Bruce Conner. Ron Michael, curator of the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, will lead the presentation and discussion. The event is part of the Kansas Humanities Council's Kansas 150 Speakers Bureau.
* A solo recital by guest artist Jacob Sentgeorge, tenor, will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, in All Faiths Chapel. Sentgeorge teaches voice and opera theater at the University of Central Missouri.
* Create landscapes with watercolors, acrylics or pastels at the School Vacation Day Workshop-Landscapes at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at the Beach Museum. The focus will be on horizon line and perspective. Entry is $5 per child. Reservations can by made by calling 785-532-7718 or by email to klwalk@k-state.edu.
* The Grammy award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, in McCain Auditorium as part of the McCain Performance Series. Tickets cost $11 to $45, with a variety of discounts available for K-State students, faculty and staff; military members; and youth 18 and under. * The Collegiate Chorale and Men's Choir, conducted by K-State's Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu Oppenheim, both assistant professors of music, will perform a variety of musical selections at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in All Faiths Chapel.
* The K-State Concert Choir and Women's Choirs will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in All Faiths Chapel. These choirs are also conducted by K-State's Oppenheim and Yu Oppenheim.
* Rock and roots powerhouse band Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $7.50 to $25, with a variety of discounts available for K-State students, faculty and staff; military members; and youth 18 and under. * The K-State Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, under the direction of Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, and the K-State Clarinet Choir, conducted by Tod Kerstetter, associate professor of music, will share a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, in All Faiths Chapel.
* The Journaling Workshop will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Beach Museum. Designed for ages 10 and up, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about experiencing the world around them through their senses. They will learn about journaling using the museum's collection of works by Kansas artists and record their thoughts through words and pictures. Entry is $5 per child. * The K-State Big Bands will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in Union Station at the K-State Student Union. The big bands are directed by Fred Burrack, director of graduate studies in music.
* Part of the annual Opera Workshop, K-State voice students will perform scenes from well-known operas at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, in All Faiths Chapel.
* The K-State Singers, directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu Oppenheim, will present their fall show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased by calling the McCain Auditorium box office at 785-532-6428 between 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
* Immerse yourself in the Beach Museum of Art at its Art Beyond Site Open House at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30. Activities are designed to allow visitors to experience art with all their senses. Stations include investigating sculptures through touch, opportunities to examine small details in selected art works, verbal imaging descriptions and activities that demystify art media. Service animals are welcome, and wheelchairs and walkers are available upon request. Staff will be available to escort visitors with special needs. This event is in conjunction with Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month.
* "Mozart's Requiem" will be performed by the Munich Symphony Orchestra, featuring Philippe Entremont and Gloria dei Cantores, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, in McCain Auditorium. Tickets cost $18 to $42, with a variety of discounts available for K-State students, faculty and staff; military members; and youth 18 and under. * The K-State Jazz Combos will present their annual Halloween Jazz Jam at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, at Forum Hall in the K-State Student Union. The combos are directed by K-State's Craig Treinen, assistant professor of jazz studies.
