Multiple education researchers invited to present at American Educational Research Association annual conference

Several College of Education faculty members and colleagues presented at the American Educational Research Association annual conference April 8-12 in Washington, D.C.

Linda P. Thurston, associate dean for research and graduate studies and Lydia E. Skeen chair, explained the college's ever-increasing visibility is due in large part to its intense focus on research.

"The high rate of participation of College of Education faculty and students at the profession's premier conference demonstrates our commitment to developing new knowledge in the field and expanding the impact of our research," Thurston said.

Kakali Bhattacharya, associate professor of educational leadership, presented:

  • "Dropping My Anchor Here: Working with Truth Claims Within and Beyond Academia;"
  • "Ontological Tracings Informing Qualitative Research: Arts-Based Pedagogies as Inquiry;"
  • "Understanding Entangled Relationships between Un/interrogated Privileges: Tracing Research Pathways with Art, Duoethnography, and PechaKucha;" and
  • "Responding Inside, Reacting Outside: Performative Sculpture Creation in the Capital." This paper was co-presented with Meaghan Cochrane, a College of Education graduate student."

 Jessica Holloway-Libell, assistant professor of educational leadership, presented:

  • "The Evolving Conversation Around the Validity of Using Student Test Scores to Measure Teacher Effectiveness;" and
  • "Teacher Expertise, Democracy, and "Rational" Observational Systems for Teacher Evaluation and Accountability." This paper was co-presented with four colleagues from Arizona State University: Anna Montana Cirell; Audrey Amrein-Beardsley; Alice Hays; and Kathryn Chapman.

Amanda Morales, assistant professor of curriculum and instruction, and co-author Jeong-Hee Kim at Texas State University presented a paper based on the researchers' new e-book titled "Being the 'FIRST': A Narrative Inquiry into the Funds of Knowledge of First Generation College Students in Teacher Education."

Frank Spikes, professor of educational leadership, presented "Measuring Learning in the Workplace" at the paper session for the workplace learning special interest group.

Thurston and co-presenter June E. Gothberg at Western Michigan University presented "Increasing Involvement of Diverse, Vulnerable and Hard-to-Reach Participants in Research and Evaluation."

Lydia Yang, assistant professor of special education, counseling and student affairs, and Doris Wright Carroll, associate professor of special education, counseling and student affairs presented "Gendered Microaggression Inventory: Construction and Initial Validation."
