Animal welfare advocate to speak at Kind Hearts, Caring Hands Day today
Tom Lenz, doctor of veterinary medicine and diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists, will be the guest speaker for the annual Kind Hearts, Caring Hands Day at 11 a.m. today in Frick Auditorium. Lenz is nationally known for his work in equine welfare and his presentation is titled “Animal Welfare Challenges: Lessons Learned.”
In 2005, Lenz and others established the Unwanted Horse Coalition which grew out of a national summit organized by the American Association of Equine Practitioners held in conjunction with the American Horse Council. The summit was held to bring key stakeholders together to start a dialogue on the plight of the unwanted horse in America and develop a consensus on the most effective way to work together to address this issue. In June 2006 the Unwanted Horse Coalition was folded into the American Horse Council and now operates under its auspices.
Lenz is the immediate past chairman of the Unwanted Horse Coalition and is now a senior director of equine veterinary services at Pfizer Animal Health.
