K-State band concerts March 8-9

Submitted by School of Music, Theatre, and Dance

The K-State band program will present its spring concerts in McCain Auditorium on Wednesday, March 8, and Thursday, March 9. Both concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free to the public.

On Wednesday, March 8, the Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony will perform works by Archer, Copley, Mackey, Meechan, Ticheli and more. The ensembles will be joined by John Kilgore, professor of trumpet at K-State, on Meechan's "Loss Verses" and Arban's "Carnival of Venice." Joining the ensembles will be composer Peter Meechan. He will be in residency the entire week, guest lecturing in classes and providing insight during the final rehearsals leading up to this week's concerts. The Wind Ensemble is under the direction of Frank Tracz, director of bands, and the Wind Symphony is under the direction of Alex Wimmer, assistant director of bands.

On Thursday, March 9, the Concert Band and University Band will perform. The Concert Band will begin by performing works by Carter, Saucedo, Sparke and Ticheli. The Concert Band will be conducted by graduate students Olivia Bazanos, Cally Bitterlin, Tyler Lee and Preston Thomas.

The University Band will follow, performing works by Standridge, Grundman, Hazo and others. The University Band is primarily made up of music education majors performing on secondary instruments and is conducted by junior and senior education majors. This experience provides them with opportunities that will better prepare them for student teaching.
