K-State Libraries to recognize anniversary of the Hale Library fire
K-State Libraries will host a presentation about the 2018 Hale Library fire and the subsequent renovation efforts from 9-11 a.m. on May 22 in Room 581 of Hale Library or via Zoom webinar.
An accidental fire started on the roof of Hale Library during the afternoon of May 22, 2018. The building suffered catastrophic damage as a result of the smoke and the large amount of water needed to extinguish the fire. As a result, all books within the building were relocated to a series of recovery centers in Manhattan, Kansas City and Ft. Worth, where they would begin a rigorous cleaning and restoration process that would take years to complete.
"I am very proud of all the library staff members who worked over multiple years in challenging conditions to return the collections to Hale Library," said Michelle Turvey-Welch, department head of content development. "Their dedicated work and love of the Libraries made it possible for the collections to return once again."
Libraries staff members were spread across campus to work in temporary office spaces provided by gracious host departments and buildings. Many staff and faculty still with the Libraries today recall the intensive efforts to restore and renovate Hale Library over three years.
"Many groups were involved in the reconstruction of Hale Library, including K-State Facilities, the Division of IT, PGAV Architects, Belfor Property Restoration, Hutton Construction and more than 20 additional subcontractors," said Mike Haddock, associate dean of research, education and engagement. "I was most fascinated by the painstaking work done by John Canning & Company to restore the historic Great Room murals and the' We Are the Dream' mural."
A fully restored and renovated Hale Library rose from the ashes in 2021. The new building features many spaces and technologies that support student learning and community needs. Although the devastation of the fire provided many serious challenges, it offered a unique opportunity to rebuild the library as a first-rate, next-generation library.
"Our fully remodeled building provides spectacular opportunities for innovation, engagement, partnerships and experimentation in support of K-State's new strategic plan and other initiatives," said Dean of Libraries Joe Mocnik. "We also think it's crucial that the library help democratize access to resources as a part of K-State's land-grant mission."
The presentation will include pictures of the fire and a discussion about post-fire recovery and reconstruction efforts. Libraries staff who witnessed and were affected by the fire will also share their stories and experiences of the event.
You can join the webinar on May 22 by joining the Zoom session or by visiting Room 581 of Hale Library. Refreshments will be available for in-person attendees.
