Today: K-State Cancer Research Week open house

Submitted by Sherry Fleming

Open house locations

The Johnson Cancer Research Center will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, as part of K-State Cancer Research Week.

Guests have the opportunity to visit cancer research labs at K-State. Guests will see how research labs are different than clinical labs and might be able to catch a scientist in action. Stop by the Johnson Cancer Research Center to pick up a map of the open labs, or watch for signs and arrows.

During the open house, the labs open to visitors will have faculty and graduate students who can explain what happens in the labs. Some of the work includes: how flies and algae are used to study cancer, how chemists are creating new chemicals for the treatment of pancreatic cancer and how engineers are helping in cancer research.

Labs at the veterinary school will demonstrate how they use natural products to treat lung cancer, how nanoparticles can treat pancreatic cancer and how heart function is affected by cancer therapies.

The week is full of cancer research-related events to inform the public about the basic cancer research performed at K-State and fundraising events. The events will be held in the Manhattan area on campus and at local businesses around the campus.
