Management professors earn best paper award in China

Marne Arthaud-Day and Chwen Sheu from the department of management in the College of Business Administration won the Best Paper Award at the seventh International Conference on Operations and Supply Chain Management this summer in Shanghai, China.
Arthaud-Day is the von Waaden business administration professor in management and Sheu is a professor and head of the department of management, where he serves as a faculty of distinction and Paul Edgerley chair in business. The conference had a total of 116 submissions from nine countries. Only five papers received the Best Paper honor.
"We were honored to receive this award," Sheu said. "This is a prestigious academic meeting where scholars worldwide in supply chain management gather every year to discuss and share the findings of their Asia-Pacific based research. There were many submissions to the conference this year, and we were glad to represent the university and the college while abroad."
The paper, "The Mediation Effects of Entrepreneurship Orientation and R&D Investment: A Resource-Based View," describes how two corporate resources — research and development investment and entrepreneurial orientation — can improve business performance by helping companies to manage environmental uncertainty.
The authors tested their research using a data set of 604 manufacturing firms in China. Their results suggested that both research and development investment and entrepreneurial orientation serve as helpful resources that help companies manage an unpredictable environment.
Research and development investment helps firms develop technological resources to respond to environmental threats, while entrepreneurial orientation helps mangers create opportunities out of technological and supply chain uncertainty.
