Philosophy professor to present at the Theatre and Performance Research Association in Scotland
On Friday, James R. Hamilton, professor of in the department of philosophy, will present “Self-display and theatricality” at the annual meeting of the Theatre and Performance Research Association in Glasgow, Scotland.
In this presentation, Hamilton discusses a display theory of acting, a pretense theory of acting, the “wars” over theatricality and performativity that began with the emergence of the “performance studies” movement in the 1960s and 1970s, and offers an account of the state of play in that on-going discussion in terms of a finer-grained analysis of “as-if behavior” than is currently on offer in either philosophy of mind, performance studies or theater studies.
