Agronomy graduate student awarded Association for Women Geoscientists scholarship
Alexis Correira, doctoral student in the department of agronomy, was awarded the Sean S. Thomson Service Scholarship by the Association for Women Geoscientists, or AWG, Osage chapter. The goal of this scholarship is to encourage and support students who are interested in the association's mission of increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in the geosciences through service to the community.
The scholarship was made possible by AWG Osage and the AWG Foundation. It is funded in honor of Sean S. Thomson of Lawrence for his invaluable support of the Osage chapter.
Correira is originally from Taunton, Massachusetts, and works as a graduate researcher and instructor. She received her bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology from Bridgewater State University in 2021 and started her doctoral studies under the supervision of DeAnn Presley, professor in the department of agronomy. Her research focuses on soil science and the implementation of cover crops in Kansas cropping systems. Correira served as the founding president of the K-State chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society, where she organized service trips for the group and outreach activities with K-State Office for the Advancement of Women in Science and Engineering, or KAWSE.
