K-State Bands hosts 30th annual Summer Music Camp
Submitted by the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance
The K-State Bands hosted its 30th annual Summer Music Camp June 9-13.
Frank Tracz, Alex Wimmer, Zack Deininger, and 25 current and former music students coordinated three large concert bands and nine small ensembles comprising 180 students in grades 5-12 from five states. Jay Gilbert, professor emeritus at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska; Larry Blocher, professor emeritus at Troy University in Troy, Alabama; and Andy Feyes, director of instrumental studies at Doane University in Crete, Nebraska; were the guest conductors for the three large concert bands.
Students at the camp not only received a quality musical instruction from the camp staff and K-State music faculty but got to experience campus by bowling at the K-State Student Union, eating at Kramer Dining Center, and performing with the Manhattan Municipal Band Concert in City Park. The camp was highlighted by a performance on June 13 in McCain Auditorium. The final concert included a piece that involved all 180 students, performing "Song of America," pictured above.
Special thanks go to K-State Housing and Dining Services and McCain Auditorium for providing accommodations so that camp could occur this summer.
Next year's camp will be June 8-12, 2025.
