Global religious, spiritual and nonreligious observance information

The President's Committee on Religion, Spirituality and Nonreligious Diversity presents the global observance information for Aug. 1 to Aug. 18. 

Dormition Fast — Thursday, Aug. 1, through Wednesday, Aug. 14. Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox. Period of fasting observed according to the strict Lenten rule in preparation for the commemoration of the Dormition of the Theotokos.

Tisha B'Av — Monday, Aug. 12. Tradition: Judaism.

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Thursday, Aug. 15. Tradition: Christianity-Protestant, Christianity-Roman Catholic. Commemorates the assumption of Mary, mother of Jesus, into heaven.

Dormition of the Theotokos — Thursday, Aug. 15. Tradition: Christianity-Orthodox. Commemorates the respose of the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary.
