Free Online Course Design Institute offered to assist those teaching or developing online courses

Submitted by Trina McCarty

The Online Course Design Institute is a five-week experience for K-State instructors and graduate students who are currently teaching or who plan to develop an online course in the next year. The institute is offered completely online to provide instructors the opportunity of experiencing the learner’s perspective.

The course covers best practices for teaching online while providing practical applications. Through the course, participants will gain higher confidence in the ability to teach online. Participants completing all requirements will earn a certificate of completion.

This program is based on a Backward Design course-building model that walks participants through drafting course goals and objectives, course mapping, and assignment and assessment design. Participants will engage in five modules.

  • Module 1: Teaching Persona, Philosophy and Practice
  • Module 2: Fundamentals of Online Teaching and Learning
  • Module 3: Integrating Technology into Teaching and Learning
  • Module 4: Student Success in Online Teaching and Learning
  • Module 5: Assessment in Online Teaching and Learning

The Online Course Design Institute is provided at no cost, but limited seats are available. Basic knowledge of Canvas is required. If you need Canvas training prior to the institute or have any questions about the program, please contact the Center for Academic Innovation instructional designers, or Lisa Shappee at K-State Salina.

The fall 2024 Online Course Design Institute will run from Sept. 3 to Oct. 4. Those interested in the institute can register online.
