Adrian Miller presents 'Soul Food: Celebrating the Past, Present and Future of America's Culinary Gem'
Join Adrian Miller, author of a James Beard Award-winning book, for an engaging presentation titled "Soul Food: Celebrating the Past, Present and Future of America's Culinary Gem," at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in the Hemisphere Room, Room 581 of Hale Library at Kansas State University.
You may think you know the true history of soul food, but you probably don't. In his presentation, Miller will trace the journey of soul food cuisine from West Africa to the American West by showing what people of West African heritage ate before European contact, during The Middle Passage, through slavery in the American South, after Emancipation and while migrating and settling in other parts of the U.S. He will end by identifying the current and future trends in soul food and shows how this cuisine is healthier than its current image suggests.
Miller is an award-winning food writer, former attorney and certified barbecue judge. He served as a White House special assistant to President Bill Clinton and as a senior policy analyst for former Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter Jr. He is currently the executive director of the Colorado Council of Churches and recently co-curated the "Proclaiming Colorado's Black History" exhibit for the Museum of Boulder. He is the author of three books, "Soul Food," "The President's Kitchen Cabinet" and "Black Smoke."
This event is hosted by K-State Libraries and is open to the public.
Event sponsors include the Dow Center for Multicultural and Community Studies, the K-State Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the Department of Diagnostic Medicine and Pathobiology, and the Richard L. D. and Marjorie J. Morse Department of Archives and Special Collections.
