Two architectural engineering students named finalists for ASHRAE EmpowHERment Award
A pair of Kansas State University architectural engineering students made up two of the four finalists for the ASHRAE EmpowHERment Award, given annually to celebrate emerging female students interested in careers in the heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration fields.
Haylee Nicholas, senior in architectural engineering, Wichita, and Hannah McCormick, junior in architectural engineering, Overland Park, were both named finalists. Nicholas also received a $500 scholarship award.
The competition asked applicants to showcase critical thinking, creativity and innovative ideas through TEDx style filmed presentations. Students submitted their responses to the prompt "How can young female engineers, educators, parents and the ASHRAE community work to encourage more girls to consider careers in STEM?"
As part of the experience, the two attended the ASHRAE Leadership Symposium in Chicago on Sept. 26-27.
