Emmanuel Nwachukwu receives 2024 Chris Stiegler Turfgrass Science Student Travel Award and Fellowship
Emmanuel Uzoma Nwachukwu, a master's student in the department of horticulture and natural resources, has been selected as a recipient of the 2024 Chris Stiegler Turfgrass Science Student Travel Award and Fellowship.
His application was among the outstanding applications received from a pool of other highly qualified applicants. The award check for $1,500 was presented to him during the Division C-5 Turfgrass Science Business Meeting held on Nov. 13 in San Antonio, Texas.
Nwachukwu's advisor, Ross Braun, assistant professor of turfgrass and landscape management, received the same award in 2015 during his Ph.D. program at Kansas State University.
This prestigious award was given to support young turfgrass scientists in honor and memory of Chris Stiegler, an astute and bright turfgrass scholar who passed in an automobile accident on Dec. 24, 2010.
This award and fellowship will support Nwachukwu's long-term career in the turfgrass industry as he continues with his master's research focused on sod production of cool-season turfgrass species, ecological dynamics, germination and establishment differences studies.
In addition to his achievements, Nwachukwu won second place in the graduate student poster competition for the turfgrass water conservation and management division at the 2024 ASA, CSSA and SSSA Canvas Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
