Self-respect is a judgment we make about ourselves as a result
of the choices we have made. If we have an internal locus of
control, we shape our self-respect around an internal moral
code, not the opinions of others. The source (locus) of self-respect
lies within each of us. Self-respect is gained though making
difficult moral choices, not getting others to like us. Children
may learn that there can be a high cost in achieving popularity,
one that actually diminishes self-respect.
