Values originate in relationships. A child, for example, is profoundly
affected by a parent’s values and makes them her own.
As she grows up, she may gradually find her religion as a source
of guidance for her personal code. In the development of a
healthy conscience, values are thoroughly integrated into character.
Internalized values are like a personal gyroscope that points
us in the right direction. Externalized values are more like
a weathervane, easily changed by outside forces. An external
locus of control does not build honor or self-respect because
they reside in something outside of us. They do not “belong” to
us. How do children learn an external locus on of control?
There are two dramatically different forms of childrearing
that influence an external focus.
