K-State Microcredentials: Enhancing Skills for the Workforce
Submitted by Jo A Maseberg-Tomlinson
The Center for Academic Innovation at Kansas State University supports the development of both noncredit and credit microcredentials. These microcredentials are designed to provide learners with specific skills that are highly relevant in today’s workforce. To determine if a microcredential is the right solution, departments must ensure they have support, conduct a market analysis, and meet high educational standards. Additionally, the microcredential should have a robust assessment process and be accessible to the intended audience.
Who can create a microcredential? Any major academic unit at K-State, including all colleges, K-State Olathe, K-State Salina, K-State Libraries, K-State Research and Extension, K-State Graduate School and the Staley School of Leadership.
For those considering offering a microcredential, it’s important to decide whether it will be noncredit or credit. Noncredit microcredentials offer flexibility in either an in person or online format as well as flexible time frames and pricing structures. Credit microcredentials must adhere to existing processes, including enrollment through KSIS and using Canvas as the Learning Management System (LMS). They should be less than 12 credit hours and can be stackable.
To assist faculty and staff interested in launching a microcredential, the Center for Academic Innovation will host a “Getting Started with K-State Microcredentials” drop-in information session on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. in 181 Hale Library on the Manhattan campus. Additionally, a separate Zoom drop-in session will be available on Nov. 19 from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. If you’re interested in attending, please RSVP or just drop in!
These sessions will cover the processes and timelines for developing, proposing, and launching a microcredential. For more information, visit the K-State Microcredentials website or contact microcred@k-state.edu. You can also request a custom training for your department, college or campus from the Center for Academic Innovation staff by emailing microcred@k-state.edu.
