Assistant professor at K-State Salina presents applied virtual reality research at AHFE International Conference

Submitted by Michael Oetken

Michael Oetken, an assistant professor in immersive system design at Kansas State University Salina and an expert in strategic media, presented his latest research paper, "Using Media Equation Theory to Assess Anthropomorphism of Intelligent Virtual Reality Training Systems in Organizational Settings," at the 2024 AHFE International Conference on Human Factors in Design, Engineering, and Computing. The conference took place Dec. 8-10, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The conference is a premier global forum that brings together leading researchers, practitioners and industry experts to explore advancements in human factors and system design. Oetken's presentation highlights the role of Media Equation Theory in evaluating how individuals perceive and interact with virtual reality training systems that mimic human-like behavior within organizational settings. His work provides critical insights into the design and implementation of intelligent VR systems to enhance training effectiveness and workplace adaptability.

"Intelligent VR systems are becoming integral to modern training environments, and understanding how people anthropomorphize these systems is essential for improving user experience and organizational outcomes," Oetken said. "This research bridges a key gap in our understanding of human-technology interaction."

Oetken's findings offer a unique perspective on the intersection of human factors, technology and organizational development, positioning K-State Salina at the forefront of innovation in virtual training systems.
