Academic Success and Student Affairs resources to help students start strong
Submitted by Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs
Early in the semester is a great time for students to be proactive in their academic success. Students may realize that their study techniques or time management skills are not suited for the rigor of college courses. They may need additional academic support, or assistance in securing accommodations. Whatever it may be, the Division of Academic Success and Student Affairs has a resource to help.
- Get individualized strategies for academic success — Meet with an academic coach to create an academic success plan based on personal goals. Coaches help develop academic skills like study techniques, test-taking skills and time management. Learn more at k-state.edu/aac.
- Meet with a tutor to get help in a specific course or in success skills — All students can use Tutoring Services’ free resources, which facilitate the learning process. Tutoring is available by appointment or at drop-in locations around campus. More information is at k-state.edu/aac.
- Get support transitioning to college — The first semester at K-State can be challenging to get used to. The K-State First team is dedicated to making the transition easier. Visit k-state.edu/first to learn more and view resources designed for faculty and staff.
- Download — and use — the Navigate app. Navigate is a free app where students can make appointments with campus resources, plan out courses, stay on top of to-dos and deadlines, and reach out for help for non-emergency challenges. Getting started in Navigate takes just a few minutes, but the benefits of using this tool last the entire semester! Visit k-state.edu/navigate for more.
- Get comprehensive academic support — Students who are first-generation, income-limited and/or have a documented disability may be eligible to participate in TRIO Educational Supportive Services. TRIO ESS provides additional academic support, including success coaching, tutoring, financial literacy support, and graduate school or career preparation, to 300 students each year. Learn more at k-state.edu/ess.
- Refresh your memory on the Honor Pledge — All students — full-time, part-time, and online — acknowledge the jurisdiction of the K-State Honor and Integrity System, which presumes students’ academic work is performed honestly and without unauthorized assistance. Discover the basics of the Honor and Integrity System, and view tips, at k-state.edu/honor.
- Secure academic and housing accommodations — The Student Access Center facilitates a supportive and inclusive learning environment by securing academic and housing accommodations for permanent and temporary disabilities. To get started with the process, visit k-state.edu/accesscenter.
- Visit the Pre-Professional and Exploratory Advising Center — If students have questions about changing majors, or want to learn more about what major might be a good fit for them, exploratory advisors are here to help. Students with a pre-law, pre-vet, or pre-health designation can meet with a pre-professional advisor to learn what they can do now to prepare a strong professional school application later. Get started at k-state.edu/ppac.
- Reach out for help when you need support — Student Support and Accountability provides support to students experiencing challenges which may prevent them from being successful in their courses. Many students look to support from SSA if they are experiencing physical or mental health challenges, academic struggles, personal or family experiences, financial barriers, challenges adjusting to college life, or anything between. Connect with the office by visiting k-state.edu/student-support.
DASSA provides an impactful and holistic K-State experience by aligning student life resources with academic support programs, so you can succeed inside and outside the classroom. To learn more about all the ways we support students, visit k-state.edu/dassa or stop by Room 122 of Anderson Hall.
