Submitted by Sarah E. Velasquez
The Johnson Cancer Research Center at Kansas State University announces its 2024 K-State Cancer Research Week, happening on Sept. 10 and 11. These events will highlight groundbreaking cancer research and provide students, faculty and the public with opportunities to engage with K-State researchers who are driving innovations in cancer treatment and prevention.
"K-State Cancer Research Week is a chance for our researchers to share their incredible work with the K-State community and the greater Manhattan public," said Sherry Fleming, director of the Johnson Cancer Research Center. "We believe that advancing cancer research involves not just the scientific community but the entire community. The cure starts with us — scientists, students and supporters. By working together, we're making progress in the fight against cancer, and events like this are key to building that partnership."
This year's events promise to be both informative and engaging, offering a platform for researchers to share their latest work and connect with the community in unique and dynamic settings.
Calendar of events:
- Cancer Data Blitz, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the K-State Student Union. Kicking off the week is the Cancer Data Blitz, hosted by renowned local emcee Dave Lewis. This fast-paced event will challenge K-State researchers and faculty to present their cutting-edge cancer research in just two minutes, using two slides. Recent graduate cancer research awardees will also showcase their work through a poster session. This is a great opportunity to see the breadth and depth of cancer research happening at K-State in a rapid-fire format.
- Science on Tap, 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Manhattan Brewing Company. Join us and the Sunset Zoo for "Science on Tap: The Science Behind the Cure." Attendees will have the chance to learn about cancer research directly from K-State's top scientists, all while enjoying locally crafted brews. This casual event provides a unique opportunity to engage with the researchers working to advance cancer cures in a relaxed, approachable environment.
