Registration open for Research Safety Bootcamp
Submitted by Rachael Weiderman
The Research Safety Bootcamp, hosted by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety in partnership with Hale Library, is returning to campus Feb. 10-14. This event provides education, training and networking opportunities for K-State faculty, staff, and students and attendees from federal government, state government and private industry. This event is designed for participants at all knowledge and skill levels.
All attendees will recieve a certificate of training issued officially by K-State. An OSHA-10 certification and 15 continuing education units are available for resume building and credential maintenance.
This year, the program offers:
1. A comprehensive fume hood course hosted by Labconco Corporation's experts Luke Savage, Cale Beiermann and Kasey Fulmer. Lunch is provided by Labconco. This course will cover fume hood basics, advantages of fume hood use for containment, fume hood replacement considerations, mechanical systems, filtered fume hoods, risk assessments and project planning.
2. A Fisher Scientific Vendor Fair hosted with Senior Sales Representative Melissa Sides. Vendors bring the latest research and laboratory equipment to campus and can help provide solutions to laboratory needs and challenges. Vendors are subject-matter experts in their fields and provide invaluable support to our bootcamp and campus science community.
3. Breakout sessions with topics ranging from grant writing to situational awareness to one health presented by subject-matter experts in their fields: Nancy Daniels, Jacqueline Aenlle, Andi Warren, Samson Jimenez, Jin Lee, Lisa Brummett, Sadish Karunaweera, Paige Adams, John Greer, Joanna Berg, Jeff Sheldon, Natalia Costa Ball, Josie Vanloozen, Chloe Wurst Edger and Rachael Weiderman.
4. An optional OSHA-10 certification course with the Kansas Department of Labor and Tim Cruz that will include examples of how regulations and standards are applicable to laboratory and research environments. Certification is $10 or free with paid registration to the bootcamp. This is an industry-recognized certification for your resume/CV.
5. An after-hours networking event with Fisher Scientific vendors and Melissa Sides — stay tuned for venue. We will choose a local restaurant and discuss science and innovative solutions over food and drinks.
6. Opportunities to experience the Sunderland Foundation Innovation Laboratory, a state-of-the-art lab in Hale Library with studios, makerspaces and fabrication spaces stocked with the latest technologies and equipment, directed by Jeff Sheldon.
The full schedule and registration links can be found on the website.
Groups registering multiple individuals, including departments, laboratory groups, or non-K-State organizations should contact Rachael Weiderman for a group rate at warhurst@k-state.edu. Any questions, feedback or ideas for the next Research Safety Bootcamp can also be shared with Weiderman.
