Pre-Law to host alumni panel today

Submitted by Cadence Ciesielski

Ever wonder what law school is really like? Join the Pre-Law Alumni Panel to hear from law students at 5:30 p.m. today, March 2, via Zoom.

K-State alumni and current seniors will share advice for how to succeed in law school and discuss how they studied for the LSAT, chose their law school and applied for scholarships. Feel free to ask questions about anything you are curious about.

Register in advance for this meeting.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.

The following are the panelists:

Olivia Rogers is a first-year law student at Notre Dame Law School, where she is a Weigand scholar. Originally from Gardner, she graduated from K-State in 2020 with a degree in political science. During her time at K-State, she served as the editor in chief of the Live Ideas Undergraduate Journal, opinion editor at the Collegian, vice president of the University Honors Program, and was involved with pre-law. She spent each spring semester interning at the Kansas Legislature. Her goal is to live out her dreams of owning a sheep farm and writing the next great American novel. This summer, she will intern for the Hon. Eric Melgren on the U.S. District Court in Wichita.

Ashlyn Shultz graduated from K-State with a double major in political science and philosophy. At K-State, she was a legislative advocate, where she learned how to advocate before the Kansas Legislature, and interned for a state senator. Shultz is the first K-State student to accelerate her law degree through the K-State to KU Law LEAD program, and now is a 2L at the top of her law class. She will intern at Arthur Green Law Firm in Manhattan this summer.

Marley Barnett is a 1L at Washburn Law, where she is a Shamberg scholar, receiving full tuition-plus. At K-State, she was involved in Pre-Law Ambassadors, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Big Brothers Big Sisters. At Washburn, she is a member of the Native American Law Students Association and the Pro Bono Society.

Emily Lavery graduated from K-State in May 2019 with a degree in business administration. At K-State she was involved with Business Ambassadors, Sigma Kappa sorority and the K-State First Student Advisory Council. She is a 2L Merit scholar at the University of Iowa College of Law and is the co-president of the Iowa Student Bar Association. She is also involved with the Organization of Women Law Students and Staff and is a research assistant for Professor Alison Guernsey.

Austin Nichols is in his final year at Vermont Law School, where he studied on an accelerated two-year track. Nichols graduated from K-State in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in journalism and mass communications and worked as an entrepreneur for five years before deciding that law was his calling. Nichols has great advice for students considering taking time off before starting their legal careers.

Ben Brokesh is a senior at K-State in electrical engineering. He grew up in Manhattan. He hopes to use his legal career to pursue renewable energy intellectual properties to help push renewable energies forward. At K-State he created the K-State Solar Club to address the lack of renewable energy experiences available. He also worked as a researcher in labs and for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Brokesh scored in the top 1% on the LSAT and is applying to top 10 schools — he's excited to share his LSAT study tips and talk about navigating his law school decision process.
