Applications open for Government Relations student internship

Submitted by Office of Government Relations

The K-State Office of Government Relations announces the second year of the student internship program, providing an incredible opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in the field of government relations.

This immersive program will select four student interns to work directly at the Kansas State Capitol. Interns will actively participate in government relations efforts, including monitoring relevant legislative committees, engaging with elected officials and handling administrative responsibilities. The program offers valuable real-world experience and aligns with the university's commitment to providing applied learning opportunities that prepare students for future careers.

"As someone coming into this internship with a major that wasn't political science, I was worried I would be at a disadvantage," said Hope Bianco, a past intern. "I am happy to say that I was wrong. The Office of Government Relations provided a welcoming environment that encouraged me constantly throughout the internship. Strengths from all majors are valued in this role."

Interns will also have the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., to experience the federal level of government relations.

"Visit D.C. was a one-of-a-kind experience and ultimately my favorite part. We met with congressmen and staffers, got an insider's view of the nation's legislature and toured the Hill. It was the perfect combination of work and fun that left me with the best moments," said Olivia Honeywell, a past intern.

For Alexis Barnett, the internship offered deeper insights into how the Kansas Legislature functions and interacts with K-State.

"This is great first-hand experience with the Kansas Legislature. I feel like I have such a greater understanding of what they do for us now," Barnett said. "I got to learn how the legislature interacts with K-State and what that process looks like. I feel more connected to the university."

The internship is made possible through funding from the Next-Gen K-State investment plan. Christian Kiser, another past intern, emphasized the program's broad reach and impact.

"From Topeka to Washington, D.C., this internship with K-State government relations has provided me with the connections and learning experiences that will help me reach my future career aspirations," Kiser said.
