Submitted by Patrice Scott

Donna Augustine-Shaw, associate professor of educational leadership, joins a distinguished group of faculty in the College of Education as the 2024 recipient of the Kathryn A. Holen Excellence in Service Award. The prestigious award recognizes Augustine-Shaw's outstanding contributions to educational leadership through her teaching, service and scholarship.

Augustine-Shaw facilitates Masters Leadership Academies in Kansas districts, teaches courses on building and district leadership, and serves as an advisor to doctoral students. Additionally, she is the director of assessment for the department of educational leadership and the associate director of the Kansas Educational Leadership Institute, or KELI, which provides mentoring and induction for new superintendents, special education directors and principals throughout Kansas.

Under Augustine-Shaw's leadership, KELI earned gold status accreditation from the International Mentoring Association, or IMA, in both 2017 and 2020, a testament to her expertise in mentoring and leadership development. She is also active at the state and national levels, serving as a higher education program reviewer for the Kansas State Department of Education and contributing to the leadership standards review team. On the national and international stage, she serves on the IMA board and co-chairs its accreditation committee.

"I have been fortunate to work alongside outstanding colleagues, both in Kansas and beyond, and to mentor the next generation of educational leaders," Augustine-Shaw said. "The relationships I've built with educators and leaders have been incredibly rewarding. This award is a celebration not only of my work but also of the collaboration and partnerships that make it possible."

Augustine-Shaw's scholarship focuses on mentoring educational leaders and the superintendency, areas in which she brings extensive practical experience as a former classroom teacher, principal and superintendent. She holds both a master's degree and a doctorate in educational administration from Wichita State University.

In her acceptance of the award, Augustine-Shaw also expressed her gratitude to Mary Devin, who has been a mentor, colleague and friend for more than 13 years.

"This recognition is dedicated to Dr. Devin, whose guidance and support have been invaluable throughout my career," she said. "It is also a reflection of the strong support system I have received from my colleagues in the College of Education at Kansas State University."

The Kathryn A. Holen Excellence in Service Award honors the legacy of Holen, a retired educator whose contributions to the profession have had a lasting impact. Augustine-Shaw's dedication to service, mentorship and leadership development aligns perfectly with the values the award seeks to recognize.
