Kansas State University and Kansas Health Foundation partner for anti-hunger efforts in Kansas

Submitted by Office of Engagement

Kansas State University and the Kansas Health Foundation are combining efforts to drive meaningful change in Kansas through anti-hunger initiatives. This partnership aims to support the statewide Hunger-Free Kansas initiative, and it aligns with K-State's mission to promote health, well-being and economic prosperity for Kansans.

A key element of this partnership will involve collaborative efforts to ignite innovative and experimental projects at the local level, guided by K-State Research and Extension agents. To support these initiatives, the Kansas Health Foundation is providing $250,000 in funding, primarily directed to local extension offices through mini-grants ranging from $5,000-$20,000

Agent proposal submissions should enhance collaboration between K-State affiliated members — faculty, staff, specialists, etc. — and local community partners, with a focus on addressing hunger and food insecurity locally and/or regionally.

Projects should aim to advance policy, systems and environmental change and fit into one of four categories:

  1. Cross-Sector Learning: Enhancing collaboration and knowledge-sharing between different sectors.

  1. School-based Nutrition Programs: Improving access to nutritious food in schools.

  1. Alternative Food Systems: Developing sustainable and equitable food systems.

  1. Social Services Access: Connecting individuals to social services and safety nets.

Priority funding will be given to applications that demonstrate intentional policy change, focus on populations in need or catalyze additional resources.

KSRE faculty and staff are invited to attend an informational webinar opportunity from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, to learn more about the mini-grants and application process. View webinar registration. A recording of the webinar will be uploaded on the KSRE’s mini-grant website.

The mini-grant deadline application is Jan. 15, 2025. View submission and full proposal details. For more information about the Hunger Free Kansas initiative, please visit hungerfreekansas.org.
