Teaching and Learning Center's Professional Development Series
As part of the Teaching and Learning Center's Professional Development Series, Melissa Glaser, engagement coordinator for the Office of Recruitment and Admissions, will present "Improving Work-Life Harmony Through Fierce Self-Compassion and Empowered Refusal" from noon to 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 22, via Zoom.
In the world of higher education, we often feel immense pressure to excel in everything we do. We live in a culture of constant assessment, observation, analysis and evaluation — from others and from within. As a result, we may say yes when we want to say no, we may criticize ourselves for falling short of high expectations, we may sacrifice our personal well-being, we may fail to prioritize the most important relationships in our lives, or we may do all of the above. Do we really have to choose between a successful career and a well-rounded life? Yes … and no. In this presentation, we'll discuss two concepts that can help us to make choices we feel good about so that we can more confidently and intentionally determine how we invest our time and our energy. We'll explore Kristin Neff's research on fierce self-compassion and Vanessa Patrick's work on empowered refusal.
