Kristin Anders and Page Simpson regognized as Professor and Professional Staff of the Week

Submitted by Susanne Renberg

Kristin Anders

Kristin Anders, assistant professor of applied human sciences, and Page Simpson, accountant in the College of Veterinary Medicine business office, were recognized as Professor and Professional Staff of the Week at the Jan. 25 men's home basketball game. Faculty Senate, the Office of the President, K-State Athletics and the Division of Communications and Marketing wish to recognize their contributions to K-State.

Anders teaches courses on Adolescent and Emerging Adult Development, Human Sexuality and Theories of HDFS. She loves being able to inspire students in the classroom and help them use what they learn to make a difference in communities and their future careers. She has demonstrated her excellence in the classroom by being awarded the prestigious Commerce Bank and the W.T. Kemper Foundation Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2023.

Anders is also a prolific researcher with numerous publications on measuring and communicating around sexuality, including her work on sexual self-concept and sexual communication during adolescence and emerging adulthood. She currently leads/co-leads two research teams including the SHARE Team and IDOL team. She is also passionate about improving sexual and relationship education and was awarded a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant, with Professors Michelle Toews and Amber Vennum, to provide comprehensive relationship education to teens across the state of Kansas in 2021.

Simpson provides high-quality administrative support and was nominated for Professional Staff of the Week because of her exemplary professionalism while executing innumerable logistical, accounting, procedural and related responsibilities. Amongst these has been several student-centered experiential-learning field trips. In recent months and years, Simpson has helped superintend three noteworthy student-centered Frontier Field Trips to Charleston, South Carolina; Council Grove; and northern California. Her professionalism is appreciated by the faculty involved in these trips, but the true beneficiaries of her hard work are the students. Indeed, Simpson has memorably enriched the lives of the more than 50 students who have participated in these excursions to explore food safety, veterinary public health and related issues.

Simpson's administrative excellence and professionalism have truly advanced the college's mission of "exceptional teaching." In addition to her work supporting student travel, Simpson has helped with sundry other accounting/purchasing tasks. In today's complex higher-education environment, these undertakings require a tremendous amount of attention to detail, emails, phone calls and document processing. Never daunted, Simpson has performed these tasks with winsomeness, kindness and a "can-do" attitude.

The Professor of the Week recognition is coordinated by Faculty Senate, the president's office, K-State Athletics and the Division of Communications and Marketing. Recipients are faculty members selected by Faculty Senate caucuses. Those selected are provided tickets to a men's or women's home basketball game of their choosing and are recognized during halftime. This is just a small token of appreciation for those who teach at K-State.
