Kansas Music Standard #6: The teacher of music has skills in evaluating music and music performances.
Knowledge
- The teacher understands criteria for evaluating the quality and effectiveness of performances, compositions, arrangements, improvisations, and teaching materials.
Performance
- The teacher facilitates student self-evaluation of music and musical performances.
- The teacher demonstrates techniques for evaluating music and musical performances.
Without being able to evaluate music performances we would not get better. A large part of music study is being able to evaluate music and music performance. This aspect of music study is vital to music education. Music educators need to be able to evaluate music so they know what good music is and they can present it to their students. Music educators also need to be able to evaluate music performance so students can grow in their ability and musicality. I have been trained in these aspects of music evaluation throughout my education due to private lessons, learning about music history, and participation in large ensembles.
Artifacts
-Methods Analysis
This is an analysis of method books and specifically "Standard of Excellence". This analysis covers aspects of the method book such as technique, music, inclusion of standards, and aesthetic appeal. This artifact demonstrates my ability to analyze and select a beginning band method book.
Method Book Analysis-Unit Study
This is a unit study for the band peice, "Fanfare for the Third Planet". A unit study is a report of a peice of music that includes information on the composer, composition, historical perspective, technical considerations, stylistic considerations, musical elements, form and structure, suggested listening, and additional resources. This unit study shows my ability to evaluating a peice of music in depth.
