Kansas Music Standard #4: The teacher of music has skills in reading and writing music.
Knowledge
- The teacher can develop and use criteria for evaluating and selecting materials for reading and writing musical compositions.
Performance
- The teacher conducts from a variety of scores, reading multiple staves, transpositions, clefs, and contemporary notation.
- The teacher performs music notation at sight vocally and instrumentally.
- The teacher notates music from aural sources
As a music educator I have been trained in reading and notating music. This skill is a major component in conducting and teaching ensembles. To practice this skill I have participated in conducting the K-State University Band, a large ensemble that is led by students. Through conducting I have exercised my skill to read scores with multiple staves and clefs. Another skill that is important to have to identify incorrect pitches and chords is aural identification. I have worked on this skill through courses and proficiency.
Artifacts
- Band Score
This is the score to "Fanfare for the Third Planet" that I conducted in the Kansas State University Band. This artifact shows my ability to read a score with multiple staffs and clefs. In this score I have marked cues and conducting instructions to rehearse and ensemble.
