Kansas Music Standard #7: The teacher of music has an understanding of music in relation to various historical periods and cultures.

Knowledge

Performance

Music history is very important to understanding our music today.  All the music that we study and play has a significant role in the development of music throughout time.  As a music educator I have studied music history and the musical styles of differing cultures.  I can identify styles of music from different cultures and periods.  I have also had experiences in teaching middle school and high school students about another musical culture and style such as, African Drumming.  These experiences have allowed me to demonstrate the cultural music differences and similarities to students.

Artifacts

-African Drumming Lesson

This is a lesson plan that I wrote for a middle school general music lesson.  This lesson is based around African Drumming music.  This artifact shows my ability to plan a lesson based around a different cultural style of music.

 -Music History Paper

This is a term paper that I did in my undergraduate that covers the influence that John Kander and Fred Ebb had on the development of Broadway.  This artifact demonstrates my academic ability to research and write about music history and important composers.
