Biosecurity Research Institute Fellows Lecture Series to discuss 'Plant Health at Risk'

Submitted by Kerri Cole

The Manhattan-area community is invited to attend the Biosecurity Research Institute Fellows Lecture Series presentation, "Plant Health at Risk: Biosecurity and Climate Change in the Age of Emerging and Re-emerging Diseases," which will present case studies of bacterial diseases to explore the multi-faceted strategies required to address these challenges.

Guest speaker Jan Leach, plant pathologist and university distinguished professor in the department of agricultural biology at Colorado State University, will discuss strategies to improve disease surveillance, strengthen plant immunity, implement robust biosecurity measures and foster international cooperation.

Leach studies the molecular basis of plant disease susceptibility and resistance and how these responses are influenced by interactions within the phytobiome. Leach is the immediate past president of the International Society of Plant Pathology and is a fellow and a past president of the American Phytopathological Society. She is also a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology. Leach was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2021.

The "Plant Health at Risk" lecture will take place at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 4, in the BRI Lecture Hall. Admission is free, but registration is encouraged. Find more information and register online
