APDesign announces winners of JANUS Et Cie Student Design Awards

Lockridge and Stewart

The College of Architecture, Planning & Design, or APDesign, and the department of interior architecture & industrial design, or IAID, announce the winners of the JANUS Et Cie 2024 Student Design Awards. The future of design is bright — evidenced by the winners of JANUS et Cie's second annual student design competition.

APDesign award winners:

Emmett Lockridge, senior in interior architecture, received the Most Playful Award for the project "Kinection."

JC Stewart, senior in interior architecture, received the Best Presentation Award for the project "Relaxploration."

First held in 2022, this year's global competition, in partnership with design collective RIOS, centered around placemaking, with an emphasis on the dynamic relationship between pieces — how they cluster, group and fit together to foster conversation and build community. Opportunities like these align with the Next-Gen K-State initiative to deliver impactful experiences through participation in national competitions.

Students were asked to design three manufacturable pieces that serve as placemaking devices. They were to choose three from the following options: a seating fixture, light fixture, planter, shade structure, and outdoor toy or game table, with particular emphasis on the dynamic relationship between pieces — how they cluster, group and fit together to establish a place for dialogue and community. To test the flexibility and adaptability of this series of products, students were to show them in various combinations across three different sites.

"It is always thrilling to mentor students throughout the semester and celebrate their works recognition" said Kendra Kirchmer, assistant professor for IAID.

These innovative designs exemplify the core principles of the competition and demonstrate the incredible talent of our students. Congratulations to all the participants and winners for their outstanding work and contributions to the future of design.
