Johnson Cancer Research Center announces call for applications for Undergraduate Cancer Research Awards

Submitted by Sarah Velasquez

The Johnson Cancer Research Center, or JCRC, is now accepting applications for its annual Undergraduate Cancer Research Awards. These awards are designed to encourage undergraduate students to participate in cancer research early in their academic careers, offering them a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a faculty-mentored laboratory setting.

Each fall, JCRC awards these grants, funded by private donors, to support student participation in research that advances our understanding of cancer. Interested students choose a cancer center-affiliated faculty researcher to serve as a mentor. Together, the student and mentor design a research project that aligns with the faculty member’s ongoing research program. The faculty mentor then submits the award application on behalf of the student. A list of affiliated faculty researchers and the award application can be found online.

Students who are selected for the program will receive a $2,000 award and will be recognized during a spring semester banquet. Faculty mentors will also receive $1,000 per student — with a maximum of two students — to support research-related expenses.

"These awards not only introduce students to the intricacies of cancer research but also allow them to gain critical experience with scientific methods, technical approaches, and analytical thinking," said Sherry Fleming, director of the Johnson Cancer Research Center. "We hope to inspire students to consider research as a future career path and to prepare for advanced degrees in related fields."

Important details:

  • Eligibility: Undergraduate students — applications must be submitted by a JCRC faculty member.
  • Application deadline: Oct. 1.
  • The application is completed jointly by the student and the JCRC faculty mentor.
  • Students are required to enroll in one credit hour of DAS506 during the award period.
  • Applications will be judged competitively by a committee.
