Service-learning opportunities in Guatemala

Submitted by Linda Yarrow

Learn more about service-learning opportunities in Guatemala at the "Discover Guatemala: Where Culture, Adventure, and Education Collide" information meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, in Room 167 of Justin Hall.

Looking for a life transforming experience? The food, nutrition, dietetics and health department offers a six-week service-learning program in Guatemala where students and faculty work with the Maya people to improve quality of life. There is an on-site K-State program manager to assist students while living, learning and serving in Guatemala.

Why consider this program? Working and studying abroad makes you an active and engaged part of a global community. This experience can enhance job prospects and make you more competitive in an international economy, give you a broader outlook, and inspire personal and professional growth. You will have opportunity to acquire and cultivate skills and make a positive difference in the lives of the indigenous Maya. The projected dates for summer 2025 are May 25-July 3 and June 30-Aug. 8.

Examples of service-learning opportunities: work in medical clinics, teach nutrition lessons all ages, assist with community garden programs, assist with clean water programs, present cooking classes, conduct community health assessments, develop physical activity programs, assist with disease prevention programs, tutor in English/computers/business skills, provide guidance on agricultural programs, teach financial skills, teach entrepreneurial skills, as well as research opportunities. Have an interest not listed? Let us know, and we will work with you.

The six-week program is approximately $3,700. Visit the Facebook page to learn more about the program and student experiences. Learn about the program specifics. Contact lyarrow@k-state.edu or khosscruz@k-state.edu if you would like to visit further or to schedule a program presentation for faculty, campus classes and student organizations.

The deadline for summer 2025 programs is March 15.
